Steve began playing bass at the age of 17. Inspired by bands such as WatchTower, Rush, Atheist and Death he made quick progress on the instrument, joining his first band less than a year later.

It was the music of Cynic - and in particular the talents of bassist/Stick® player Sean Malone - that had the biggest impact on Steve, opening his ears to a varied new palette of influences including, most notably, jazz and fusion. It marked his introduction to both fretless bass, leading on to his discovery Jaco Pastorius and Gary Willis, and eventually the Chapman Stick® - a 10 or 12 stringed instrument with a range close to that of a piano, played using a two-handed tapping method.

Initially self-taught, he later went on to study music theory at a local college, developing an interest in Baroque composition whilst there. Wanting to further his jazz playing, and acutely aware of the lack of opportunities for bands and musicians in and around his small hometown of Lowestoft, he moved to London and enrolled at the Guitar Institute/Basstech. His desire to grow and develop as a musician continues to this day and since graduating has sought tuition from the likes of Sean Malone and Jim Lampi.

Having met Charlie at various gigs over the previous year or so, resulting in a collaboration on another project, Steve's involvement in Linear Sphere became inevitable given their shared influences, experience and vision. Contact: band[at]linearsphere[dot]com
